-- Escape machine

Project Objective

"How to Survive a Nuclear War" may sound ominous, but "The Escape Machine" was a project that transformed analog technology into a new and exciting experience. It aimed to turn a mundane vending machine into an exhilarating adventure, offering a thrilling escape during the challenging times of COVID-19.

My Role

As a pivotal team member in the project, my responsibility was to breathe life into the game and ensure a seamless user experience. This encompassed crafting a captivating storyline that would engage the participants. I concentrated on meticulously weaving the narrative into the user journey, ensuring that each puzzle seamlessly intertwined with the storyline. The process of prototyping and playtesting played a crucial role, allowing us to meticulously refine the gameplay, storyline, and ensure the clues seamlessly integrated both within and outside the machine.

Challenges Faced

One of the primary challenges was the level of commitment. I took a hands-on approach to the project, which meant I became the primary guide through the step-by-step game. This added a layer of complexity, but it ultimately made the project more cohesive.

Technology and Tools

We repurposed an old vending machine, leveraged printing, magnets, and other attributes and integrated various puzzles to create a multifaceted experience.

COVID-19 Adaptations

In the midst of the pandemic, we had to find creative ways to allow for a distanced, yet interactive experience. We introduced a locker system, forcing participants to split up and communicate via walkie-talkies to access the next set of clues.

Impact

"The Escape Machine" transformed a mundane, everyday object into an unexpected source of excitement and intrigue during the COVID-19 pandemic. It demonstrated the power of creativity and adaptation in making a challenging situation more enjoyable.
